Calgary’s Borger Group of Companies wins two major health and safety awards

On October 23, 2017 at an awards ceremony in Toronto, Calgary’s Borger Group was presented with two major workplace safety awards. These awards presented by Thomson Reuters and Canadian Occupational Safety Magazine are recognized as the most prestigious safety awards in Canada. The first award received by Borger was the Gold Recipient for 2017 Canada’s Safest Employers in the Building and Construction category. This is the fifth-year in a row that Borger has been recognized among the top 2 in this category and the second win in the past 4 years. That is the winningest streak among construction companies in Canada.

This requires an even more rigorous screening process including onsite audits from Workplace Safety and Prevention Services (WSPS). This award is described by Canadian Occupational Safety as the award that goes to, “the organization with strongest health and safety culture in the country — a culture that not only permeates the workplace, but extends into the employer’s community, networks and areas of influence to make health and safety a priority for all.” All companies in all categories across Canada from mining to transportation to Construction compete head to head for this award.
Founded in 1919 the Borger Group has become Alberta’s largest underground construction company as well as leaders in earthmoving and transport. Bill Borger, the company president and CEO describes the company safety culture as one that has, “moved from being an obligation to being a passion,” among its 400 strong team.

Hassan Hussein, the companies Safety Manager say, “it all starts with our values. We pride our selves with safety, which is our number one value to integrity to respect and all the way to working hard and having fun. Every decision at Borger revolves around our values.” Hussein continues, “Having a team that supports a safety-first culture allows every day to start with the correct mindset.”

Technology encompasses another set of trade secrets what Borger is more than happy to broadly share. The company incorporates is own app to allow instant communication to its entire team, a wiki which was a company-wide collaboration on the necessary information for team members to do their job in addition to health and safety policies, a “Think Green” environmental program, and even gamification of innovation with its unique innovation coin game.

Creating a culture based on health and safety doesn’t happen overnight but it is Borger’s hope that by demonstrating what it takes to do so will enable more workplaces to transform their own culture for the better.
